Six month photos catch your baby right at the sweet spot — sitting up, full of personality, giggly, and not yet mobile enough to squirm out of frame. Tucked between the newborn haze and the whirlwind of a first birthday, this milestone session captures a stage of your baby you’ll be so glad you slowed down for.

One day your baby is a sleepy little newborn, and then somehow, seemingly overnight, they’ve got opinions, a favorite way to blow raspberries, and a laugh that stops you in your tracks. That’s six months for you. I’ll be honest, I never expected to love six month photos as much as I do, but this age gets me every single time.
This session matters most for a few kinds of families: parents who did newborn photos with me and are trying to decide what comes next, Year of Life Collection families who have this session included and might not realize how special it really is, and first-time parents who had no idea a six month session was even a thing.

A six month session, sometimes called a “sitter session,” is exactly what it sounds like: a milestone shoot built around this specific stage, right when most babies are sitting up (or almost there) and full of personality. It’s a completely different energy than a newborn session. Instead of a sleepy baby curled up, you’ve got a wide-awake, engaged little person who’s genuinely reacting to the world around them, which means genuinely reacting to the camera too.
Because we’re shooting in your home, there’s a lot of range in one sitting: a simple, clean wall with good light, or something a little more playful with a favorite toy or family heirloom worked in. And this session works whether or not your baby is sitting fully unassisted yet. If we need a little extra support, we’ll tuck a pillow or blanket just out of frame, or if baby’s really not ready, we can shift the session a bit closer to nine months instead.
Pro tip: Some of my favorite six month sessions involve mom or dad jumping in for a few shots, then stepping behind me to make silly faces. It’s basically a guaranteed way to get the best smiles of the whole gallery.

There’s just so much personality at six months. The grins, the drool, the wide-eyed curiosity about literally everything in the room. My whole approach is to draw out real reactions instead of a stiff, posed look, which is honestly not hard to do at this age.
Here’s something that might surprise you: the “messy” outtakes are often the ones families end up framing. The mid-laugh shot, the one where baby’s reaching straight for the camera, the slightly off-balance wobble right before they catch themselves. Those are the moments that actually feel like your baby.
And here’s the other advantage of this exact age: your baby usually isn’t crawling yet. That means I can settle them right where the light is best and actually stay there for the whole session, capturing all of it, instead of chasing a mobile baby around the room.

Six months sits right in the middle, between the newborn haze and the whirlwind of a first birthday, and that middle spot matters more than most parents expect. Babies change so fast in this first year that a single session can only ever hold one small piece of it. A lot of parents assume newborn photos and first birthday photos are “enough” on their own, and then look back wishing they had something from right in between, this exact stage of sitting up, giggling, and just barely not yet on the move.
Six month photos are what round out the whole story of your baby’s first year.
One of my Year of Life Collection clients had her six month session rescheduled a handful of times because of winter weather. At one point she nearly said, “let’s just skip it and do the nine month session instead.” I’m so glad we didn’t. Once we finally got that session in, those turned out to be some of her absolute favorite photos of her baby from the entire year. She told me she couldn’t imagine having skipped it.

The ideal window is right around six months, but I stay flexible based on where your baby actually is developmentally. If they’re sitting up well, we’re in a great spot. If they’re not quite there yet, we can either support them with a pillow or blanket just out of frame, or push the session a bit closer to nine months.
Here’s something that might surprise you: the “perfect,” steady-sitting window is shorter than most parents expect. Waiting around for it to feel just right can sometimes mean missing it altogether. My calendar also tends to fill up, so I always recommend reaching out a little ahead of time to get the best date options for your baby’s actual age and stage.

A simple, neutral setup is almost always my favorite starting point, whether that’s a cleared wall inside your home with beautiful light, or a blanket spread out in the yard. From there, I love working in anything meaningful to your family. If your baby has a toy they’re currently obsessed with, don’t hide it off camera. Let’s get a few shots with it. You’re going to want to remember those little personality details. Family heirlooms are wonderful too, an outfit that used to be mom’s or dad’s, or a blanket grandma crocheted; those pieces bring so much warmth into a gallery.
Rather than leaning on tired boy-vs-girl photo clichés, I’d rather build the session around your baby’s actual personality, whatever that looks like. That’s what makes a six month gallery feel like your baby instead of a generic milestone photo.
For wardrobe, I usually recommend just one outfit, since outfit changes tend to make babies fussy at this age, though two is absolutely an option if you’d like it. One of my favorite parts of any six month session is taking that outfit off partway through to capture baby in just their diaper, rolls and all. Those images are always some of the sweetest in the gallery. (If you need outfit ideas, here are a few of my favorites for girls. And here are a few of my favorite outfit ideas for boys.)
Ready to plan your baby’s six month photos?

If you’re a Year of Life Collection client, you can choose to have your six month session already built into your plan, and it’s honestly one of the sessions I most want you to be excited about. The whole point of the Collection is capturing every big stage, not just the bookend moments of newborn and first birthday. Six months is one of the chapters in between that makes the full story complete.
If you’re not a Collection client yet, this session (captured and then lovingly preserved in an heirloom album along with the rest of the year) is a genuinely great reason to consider one. I’ve written more about how it all works over on my dedicated Year of Life Collection post, if you want the full breakdown.

I typically schedule in-home sessions around 10:00am on weekday mornings, which tends to work well between naps and feeds. If your baby’s routine looks different, we can push earlier, even to 9:00am, since babies are usually at their freshest first thing in the morning.
As far as what to have ready: one outfit is my go-to recommendation (with the option for a second), plus a favorite lovey or toy and any family heirloom pieces you’d like included. If a fussy baby is your number one worry, don’t stress about it. Smiles and a few tears are both part of a real six month session, and I keep the pace calm and unhurried so nobody ever feels rushed through it.

Six months is a fleeting, joyful, personality-packed stage, and it is so worth capturing. This is the middle chapter that completes the story of your baby’s whole first year, the one a lot of families don’t realize they’ll wish they had until it’s already gone.
I love this age so much more than I ever expected to. There’s something about a baby who’s just figured out how to laugh on purpose, who reaches for you mid-session like you’re the most interesting thing in the room, that gets me every single time. If you’re on the fence about booking, let this be the sign you slow down and capture it.

Keep it simple: soft, solid tones and textures over busy patterns. I recommend one outfit, since changes can make babies fussy at this age, though a second option is always available if you’d like it.
Six month sessions are the same $300 session fee as my other sessions. From there, you’ll choose your favorite images and products from your gallery.
Typically 30 to 60 minutes, though there’s no strict cutoff. I stay until we’ve captured it, but six month sessions generally run shorter than a full newborn session.
Totally fine! I’ll safely support them with a pillow or blanket just out of frame, or if they’re really not ready, we can shift the session a bit closer to nine months. Either way, it still turns out beautifully.
Yes, that’s actually the default! We’ll find a clean, well-lit spot inside your home, or spread a blanket out in the yard if you’d like some outdoor shots too.
