There’s nothing quite like returning to photograph a family after capturing their maternity session. That’s why I was so excited to meet this sweet family’s baby boy during their in-home newborn session in Louisville, KY. I had already connected with Courtney + Michael during their maternity shoot, and it was such a joy to now see them embracing parenthood with their newborn.
The family’s adorable dog, Raven, played the role of proud big sister. Raven’s gentle nature and curiosity were on full display as she sat beside baby Aidan, offering both love and protection. It was easy to see how seamlessly she’d transitioned into her new role, as she stayed close to her new sibling throughout the session.
We spent the session in the nursery, where the family had created a cozy space full of natural light and soft, calming colors. Baby Aidan was so peaceful in his parents’ arms, falling asleep almost immediately, snuggled with love and warmth. Raven, never far away, would sneak in some moments to rest by their side or lay watchfully nearby.
Newborn photos are best taken when your baby is about two weeks old. At this stage, babies are still sleepy and snuggly, which makes for those sweet, serene newborn shots. That said, I’ve done newborn sessions beyond this timeline, and they’ve all turned out wonderfully! The key is ensuring that you feel relaxed and ready for photos. The best time to schedule your newborn session is as soon as you know you’d like photos—this can even be months before your due date to secure a spot on my calendar. I’ll make a note of your due date, and once your baby arrives, simply reach out to set a firm date for the session.
There’s something magical about capturing a family’s first days with their newborn, especially when the whole family—including their furry members—is involved. This session was filled with joy, tenderness, and the promise of many wonderful memories ahead.
I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to document such a special time in this family’s lives, from maternity to newborn, and of course, to watch Raven be the best big sister!
I’d be honored to be considered to document your special day. Reach out here and let’s chat about your vision.
