Some winter mornings surprise you in the best way, and the Kurtz family’s February family session at the Louisville Water Tower was exactly that. The temperature was perfectly mild for the season, and the sunlight that morning was absolutely beautiful. The soft winter light paired with the bright white backdrop of the Louisville Water Tower created the dreamiest setting for a family photography session.
Winter sessions can sometimes feel unpredictable, but this morning felt calm, bright, and full of warmth. Perfect for capturing genuine family moments.
A Playful and Energetic Family Session
From the moment we started, their session was full of laughter and energy. Benjamin made sure of that! He spent much of the session showing off his impressive speed and his many sports skills, which kept everyone smiling.
Family sessions with kids are always the most fun when we embrace their personalities, and Benjamin brought so much life and excitement to every moment. Instead of trying to slow things down too much, we leaned into his energy, and it made for images that feel authentic, playful, and full of movement.
These are often the moments families treasure most when they look back on their photos years later.
Capturing Genuine Family Connection
The Kurtz family was truly the sweetest. I loved getting the chance to spend the morning with them and capture their connection as a family.
The genuine interactions, the laughter, the encouragement, and the little moments in between poses, are always what make a session feel so special. During a family session at the Louisville Water Tower, the classic architecture and open space provide the perfect backdrop for those candid moments to unfold naturally.
Why the Louisville Water Tower is Perfect for Family Photos
One thing that really stood out during their session was their outfit selection. Their clothing choices popped beautifully against the crisp white architecture of the Louisville Water Tower, and it perfectly demonstrated how important outfit and location selection can be for your photos.
The Louisville Water Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in Louisville, and its bright white structure reflects light beautifully. That soft reflection creates flattering, even light that photographers love, especially for family portraits.
The clean background also helps families stand out in photos without visual distractions.
How to Coordinate Outfits for Family Photos
When families ask me how to coordinate outfits for their session, I always suggest thinking about the word “complement” rather than “match.”
Matching outfits can sometimes feel a little too uniform in photos, while complementary colors create depth and visual interest. The Kurtz family did a wonderful job with this by choosing colors that worked together without being identical.
A helpful rule of thumb when planning outfits is to choose two or three colors and spread them throughout the family. For example, if one person wears a patterned piece that includes several colors, those tones can be echoed in other outfits in more subtle ways.
This approach helps tie everything together while still allowing each person’s outfit to feel unique.
Choosing the Right Color Palette
Another great strategy is choosing a color family, like pastels or jewel tones.
Softer pastel colors often photograph beautifully, especially in natural light. They also tend to complement skin tones without reflecting too much color onto the face. This makes them a wonderful choice for outdoor sessions, including a family session at the Louisville Water Tower, where bright architecture and natural light are prominent.
Adding Texture and Visual Interest
Mixing textures and subtle patterns can also elevate your look. Materials like linen, lace, or soft knits add dimension without overwhelming the photo.
The key is to avoid patterns that are too small or overly busy, as they can sometimes distract from the people in the image. Instead, choose textures that add depth while still keeping the focus on your family.
Matching Your Outfits to Your Location
Location is another important factor when choosing outfits for family photos.
For example, if your session is taking place in a lush green field, wearing light green might cause you to blend into the background. In contrast, the Kurtz family’s outfits worked perfectly with the bright white architecture of the Louisville Water Tower, allowing their colors to stand out beautifully.
This is why choosing your location and outfit palette together can make such a big difference in the final images.
What to Wear for a Family Photography Session
Outfit Ideas for Women
For women, flowy dresses are always a beautiful choice for photos. Dresses with movement—like fit-and-flare styles or flowy skirts—photograph especially well when walking or interacting naturally.
Details like lace or tulle can add a soft, romantic feel, while statement jewelry is a great way to introduce an extra pop of color or personality. If you prefer a bit more coverage, dresses with sleeves are also a flattering and comfortable option.
Outfit Ideas for Men
For the guys, a crisp button-up shirt is always a reliable choice. Layering with a sweater or blazer can add depth to the outfit while keeping things polished but relaxed.
If you’d like to elevate the look a bit more, ties or bowties are always a fun option that can add personality to the overall look.
Planning Your Own Family Session at the Louisville Water Tower
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable and confident wearing. Family photos are a wonderful excuse to dress up a little, but you should still feel like yourself.
