Looking for a Louisville photographer who actually knows this city? I specialize in in-home newborn, maternity, and family sessions across Louisville and the surrounding areas. Most of my sessions happen right in your living room, but I’m just as comfortable capturing your family at an outdoor location if that’s where your story belongs.

If you’ve spent any time searching for a Louisville photographer, you already know how many options are out there. And if you’re anything like most of the families I work with, you don’t just want someone who’s good with a camera. You want someone who gets this city, gets your family, and can turn your real, everyday life into something you’ll actually hang on your wall. That’s exactly what this post is here to help you figure out.
I grew up in Louisville. I’ve never lived anywhere else, and honestly, I don’t want to. This city isn’t a market I moved into to build a photography business — it’s home. My husband Michael and I are raising our two boys, Henry (4) and Matthew (10 months), right here, on Floyds Fork, and every family I photograph is, in some small way, a reflection of the life we’re building too.
I photograph a lot of Louisville moms in that stretch of life where the days feel long but the years are flying — toddlers, newborns, a house that’s a little chaotic and a lot loved. What I hear most from the families I work with is that they don’t want another stiff, posed photo session. They want their real life documented: the lived-in kitchen, the kid who won’t sit still, the way their house actually looks and feels right now. That’s what I love about this community. Louisville families care more about authenticity than a magazine-perfect backdrop, and that happens to be exactly what I specialize in.

Here’s where I’ll probably surprise you: I’m not going to hand you a list of the five trendiest photo spots in Louisville. Not because they aren’t beautiful — they are — but because in my experience, the best location for your family’s photos is almost always the one you already live in.
When families ask me where we should shoot, I always ask them a question back first: what’s most meaningful to you? For most families, especially ones with young kids, the honest answer is home. Home is where your toddler feels safe enough to actually be themselves instead of clinging to your leg in an unfamiliar park. It’s where the light is predictable, the bathroom is close, and nobody has to be buckled into a car seat mid-meltdown. I default to recommending in-home sessions for exactly these reasons, and it’s rarely a hard sell — once families understand what an in-home session actually looks like, most of them are relieved they don’t have to fight a toddler into real pants for a field session.
That said, I’m not opposed to shooting outdoors, and if there’s a location that genuinely matters to your family, I want to know about it. I shoot in multiple outdoor locations around Louisville on request, especially ones that are meaningful to the family — a favorite park, a neighborhood spot, wherever holds significance for you. If an outdoor session is calling to you, just tell me what matters to your family and I’ll help you find the right spot.
Pro tip: If you’re torn between in-home and outdoor, ask yourself which version of your family you want on your wall in ten years — the one dressed up in a field, or the one curled up on your actual couch, in the house you’re making memories in right now. There’s no wrong answer, but it’s worth sitting with.

Newborn sessions are where in-home photography makes the most sense to almost everyone, and they’re one of my favorite things to shoot. We stay right in your home, which means no car seat transitions with a five-day-old, no risk of a meltdown thirty minutes from your nursery, and a lot more flexibility if baby needs a feed or a diaper change mid-session (which, let’s be honest, they will).
I recommend booking your newborn session within baby’s first 7–14 days, while they’re still extra sleepy and flexible and before baby acne typically shows up. But I hold that loosely. A rested, adjusted set of parents will always photograph better than exhausted ones, and beautiful newborn photos are absolutely achievable anywhere in that first month. Parents and siblings are always part of these sessions — some of my favorite images are a wide-eyed big brother meeting his sibling for the very first time.

Maternity is the session type I sometimes do shoot outdoors, though plenty of moms still choose in-home, especially if they already have kids at home who’ll be more relaxed in familiar surroundings. If we do go outside, I have a handful of favorite Louisville outdoor locations I’m happy to suggest, or we can shoot somewhere that’s already meaningful to you.
I recommend reaching out during your second trimester and scheduling your session between 28–34 weeks — enough of a bump to show off, without being too uncomfortable to enjoy the hour. The number one thing moms tell me they’re worried about going in is the weather (especially if we’re outside) or simply feeling unphotogenic at eight months pregnant. I promise, neither is something you need to stress over. I stay in close communication leading up to session day, and my job is to help you feel comfortable enough that it stops mattering.

Family sessions are where “in-home” really gets to shine. A natural, relaxed family session looks completely different depending on the ages of your kids — a session with a newborn and a toddler moves at a different pace than one with elementary-age kids who can actually follow directions (some days). I build the flow of the session around your family specifically: sprinkler time in the backyard, a pizza party on the living room floor, baking cookies, swinging out back — whatever your family already loves doing together.
What families tell me they loved most, over and over, isn’t a specific pose or backdrop. It’s how comfortable they felt, and how the photos actually look like them — not a stock version of a “family photo.”
Already know an in-home session sounds like the right fit for your family?

Here’s an opinion that might surprise you: I think summer is the most underrated season for Louisville photos. Most people assume summer is a bad time to book because of the heat and because everyone’s traveling, but for in-home sessions, summer is actually one of my favorites. Everything outside is green and blooming if we step out for even a few shots, and inside, we’ve got the AC and total control over comfort. Some of my favorite summer sessions have included popsicles on the porch, a kiddie pool in the backyard, or the sprinkler running while I shoot from just inside the door.
Honestly, this is a theme across the board: extreme heat, extreme cold, a gray rainy day — these are exactly the conditions where in-home sessions win. You’re never at the mercy of Louisville’s weather when your backup plan is already your living room.
For in-home sessions specifically, I typically like to start around 10:00am to catch beautiful morning light, and we tend to stay on the south and east sides of the home, where the light pours in through the windows. If there’s another room or corner you love, I’m happy to grab a few shots there too — we just spend the bulk of our time where the light is doing the most work for us.

Knowing Louisville isn’t just a nice bonus — it actually changes how a session goes. Because I know how the light moves through a home at different times of day, I can tell you with confidence whether 10am or 4pm is going to look better in your specific living room. Because I’ve lived through enough Louisville summers and winters, I know that “let’s just push through the heat” or “let’s just tough out the cold” usually isn’t worth it.
More than once, a session that was originally planned to be outdoors has turned into an in-home session at the last minute because of rain, extreme cold, or extreme heat. Every single time, the families have ended up genuinely glad it worked out that way — not just because we didn’t have to reschedule, but because their kids were noticeably happier being able to take breaks, play with their own toys, and be in a space they already felt safe in. That flexibility isn’t something a photographer driving in from out of town, unfamiliar with your home or this city’s weather patterns, can offer on the fly.
Being local also means I’m not a vendor who shows up once and disappears. I’m part of this community. Many of the families I photograph become genuine friends over the years, especially as I get to document them again and again through the Year of Life Collection or repeat family sessions.

I serve all of Louisville and the surrounding areas, including Southern Indiana, out toward Shelbyville, and down toward Lexington and Frankfort — generally within about a 60-mile radius of Louisville, with no travel fee. If you’re outside that radius, don’t worry — just reach out, I’m still happy to talk about your session and a travel fee can be arranged. Neighborhoods I have worked with in the past include:
Don’t see your specific neighborhood listed? Reach out anyway. Chances are I can still make it work.

Hi, I’m Michelle! I’m a Louisville-born-and-raised in-home newborn, maternity, and family photographer, and I’ve been documenting Louisville families since 2023.
Before this, I was a K-5 ESL teacher. When my son Henry was born, I decided to stay home with him, and — like most new moms — I could not stop taking his picture. Friends started asking me to photograph their families too, and that’s genuinely how this whole business was born. These days I’m mom to two boys, Henry (4) and Matthew (10 months), married to my husband Michael, and living right on Floyds Fork.
I’m always the one behind the camera, even when it’s just my phone. It’s where I feel most like myself. I love finding a unique perspective and turning ordinary, everyday moments into something a family will treasure — because I know exactly how fast this season of life moves, and how much I want to hold onto it for my own family too.
When I’m not photographing families, I’m usually chasing my own two boys around, at the library with them, or floating around a kiddie pool in the backyard during a Louisville summer.

“Michelle’s ability to capture and romanticize the un-posed realness of family photos is what makes her work unique, timeless, and priceless. Her photos are beautiful, and she has the ability to come into a home and put everyone at ease for an enjoyable experience (which for family photos with a newborn and toddler is no small feat). We will always cherish our newborn pictures and look forward to getting updated photos with Michelle as our family continues to grow!”
“I was so afraid because it was a rainy day and very dark light, but Michelle is the best — she really made it work. All the pictures are amazing, and she gave us the confidence to feel comfortable in the session. Thank you so much, Michelle! Will 100% recommend.”
“Michelle is extremely professional and passionate about what she does. She was always responsive and helpful for any questions I had leading up to our family photos, as well as patient and kind when trying to take family photos with two little ones. She made the whole process a wonderful experience. Huge thank you to Michelle for capturing our family in such a beautiful way!”
“We could not have asked for a better experience when it came to maternity photos! Michelle is great at making you feel comfortable and capturing beautiful and flattering photos! Even though it was freezing (can’t control the weather), we had such a fun time during our shoot. 100/10 I would recommend her for any occasion!”

Booking is meant to feel easy, not like homework. Here’s exactly how it works:
Reach out through my inquiry form with a little about your family and what kind of session you’re picturing. I respond to inquiries fast, usually within the hour, and always within 24 hours. From there, we’ll hop on a quick call to make sure our visions line up. Once you sign your contract and pay your session fee, your date is officially held on my calendar — and if you’re expecting, I’ll simply pencil in your due date and we’ll lock in a firm newborn session date once baby arrives.
About 8 weeks before your session, I’ll send over a short questionnaire to get to know your family better, followed by a quick call to talk through which rooms we’ll use, wardrobe, and the overall flow of the day. There’s no strict time limit on session day — we stay until we’ve captured your story, whether that’s 30 minutes or 90. Afterward, you’ll receive your full gallery within about 3 weeks, and if you’ve purchased an album, that’s when the design process begins.
If weather is a factor — whether we’re shooting outdoors or planning any outdoor time during an in-home session — I stay in close communication and we’ll make the final call together about 24 hours before your session.
8 weeks minimum is my general recommendation for booking any session. If you’re expecting, reach out during your second trimester regardless of how far off your due date feels — it genuinely helps to get you on my calendar early.
I recommend at least 8 weeks out for any session, since that’s when I send your prep questionnaire and schedule our planning call. If you’re expecting, reach out during your second trimester regardless of your due date.
Yes! I serve roughly a 60-mile radius around Louisville, including Southern Indiana, Shelbyville, Lexington, and Frankfort, with no travel fee. Beyond that radius, a travel fee applies — just reach out and we’ll figure it out.
I have a flexible reschedule policy for both outdoor sessions and in-home sessions, as good natural light is so important. We stay in communication and make the final call together about 24 hours before your session.
There’s no strict time limit — sessions run until we’ve captured your story. Newborn sessions run closer to 90 minutes, maternity sessions 45–90 minutes, and family/milestone sessions 30–90 minutes depending on your kids’ ages.
You’ll receive your full gallery within about 3 weeks of your session.
Almost certainly, yes. I serve all of Louisville and surrounding areas within about 60 miles. If you don’t see your neighborhood mentioned, reach out anyway — I can likely still make it work.
At the end of the day, this is what I love most about being a Louisville photographer: getting to walk into a family’s actual home, in the middle of their actual life, and hand them back photos that feel like them. Not a staged version of your family — the real one, little handprints on the glass door and all.
If you’re ready to get your date on the calendar, I’d love to hear from you. And if you’re not quite ready yet, I’d still love to know — what does your family’s Louisville story look like? Drop a comment below and tell me your favorite spot in the city, or which session type you’re considering. I read every one.
