If you’re planning a family session at Anchorage Trail in Louisville, KY, one of the most common questions I get is:
“What time will our session be?”
The short answer?
✨ Either early morning or about 1.5 hours before sunset.
Let me show you why, and share a recent session that perfectly explains it.

The Albright’s family session at Anchorage Trail was filled with laughter and so much joy. Patrick gifted this session to Claire for Christmas as a way to document their little family just as it is now before it grows this June. 🤍
It was almost like a pre-maternity session, and I absolutely loved every second of it!
We originally planned for the end of January, but Kentucky weather had other plans. The weekend of their scheduled session brought a snowstorm with over a foot of snow! I’m so thankful this sweet family was flexible, because when we rescheduled, we were greeted with the prettiest weather and the dreamiest light.
And that beautiful light?
It was all about timing.

When you book a family session at Anchorage Trail (or any outdoor location, really), timing matters more than most people realize.
Mid day light can be harsh and can create unwanted shadows:
Even on a pretty day, overhead sun just isn’t ideal for portraits.
That’s why I don’t schedule sessions in the middle of the day.

The Albrights met me at 9:00am, closer to sunrise than to the mid day sun. And that’s exactly why their photos have that soft, glowy, flattering light.
Morning light:
At Anchorage Trail, the trees filter the early sun beautifully. When the light is low in the sky, it skims through the branches instead of beating down from overhead. The result? Even tones, natural glow, and happy faces (without squinting!).

If you’re booking an outdoor family session, here is a quick outline of the best times to aim for:
This is often called “golden hour.”
The light is warm, soft, and absolutely magical!
However, I know this can be tricky for families with littles. Sometimes this overlaps with dinner or bedtime routines, especially in the warmer months when days are longer. So, the next best time?
This is especially great for:
Yes, I know getting everyone up, dressed, and out the door can feel like a lot. But I promise, it is worth it.

If we’re scheduling your morning family session at Anchorage Trail, here are a few tips:
Or, if sunset works better for your crew, we’ll adjust bedtime for one evening, maybe have a later nap than usual, and soak up that golden light.
It’s all about choosing the light that will make your images timeless.

The Albright family showed up ready, joyful, and trusting. And because of that (and the beautiful 9:00am light), we captured this sweet season before their family grows.
That’s what these sessions are about.
Not perfection.
Not stiff posing.
Just documenting your family as it is right now, in the most beautiful light possible.
