Baby’s first year photography captures your child at every stage, from the newborn days through three months, six months, nine months, and the first birthday. Each session marks a new milestone, from first sleepy snuggles to sitting up to the first birthday cake smash, giving you a complete story of how much your baby changes in one year.

As a mom, I know I’ve looked at photos from last month and thought wait, when did the baby get so big?! If you’ve ever done this too, you already understand why the first year is worth documenting more than once. Babies change faster in these twelve months than they ever will again, and a single session can only hold one tiny chapter of it.
So, if you’re trying to figure out which baby milestones are actually worth photographing? You’re not alone. Most parents might know they want to capture more than one moment but aren’t sure which ages matter most or how to space the sessions out. Let me walk you through the five stages I typically recommend, what each one captures, and how it all comes together into one story of your baby’s first year through photos.
As a Louisville newborn and family photographer I truly love when an expectant mama books the Year of Life Collection. Being the one to document your growing baby is such an honor, and I do not take that lightly! It’s always so fun to see how your little one grows and changes, and putting these photos next to each other in an album is just so special.

The short answer? The first year moves fast, and capturing it at a few key stages gives you a complete story instead of a single snapshot.
So much changes between three months and twelve months, and one session can only capture a sliver of that. For the Year of Life Collection I typically recommend choosing two to four sessions and including a combination of maternity, newborn, three month, sitter (between six and nine months), and one year photos. (Some families also like to include pregnancy announcement photos, and that’s always a fun way to remember this first year too!) Between all of these moments, documenting the whole year tells a story that a single session never can. I’ve had parents book photos for their child’s first birthday and tell me that they never had newborn photos taken, and now that they’re already a year old, they regret it. Surprisingly, aside from newborn photos, the sitter session is the one parents tell me they love the most. This is such a fun age where baby can sit and giggle at mom and dad, but not yet crawl away, and it makes for THE cutest squishy baby pictures. Some parents worry that it’ll feel like too many photos in a short period of time, but I’ve found it’s the opposite. Spacing sessions across the year keeps the experience fun and low pressure rather than rushed.
Already know you’d like to book your own Year of Life Collection?

Although the Year of Life Collection can start with pregnancy announcement or maternity photos, your baby’s first year starts the moment they arrive, and a newborn session captures those impossibly early days before everything changes. The newborn stage captures curled up poses, tiny features, and just how small they are at the very start – photos that no later session can replace. These photos have a sleepy, snuggly quality to them that really shapes the whole feel of the gallery, and many parents (myself included!) love to remember details like the little fingers, a full head of hair, or how the baby fit in the crook of one arm. We also include more than just baby in these photos. Tired and happy parents and curious older siblings meeting the baby make these photos really come to life. All of this to say, the newborn session really sets the emotional starting point for the entire first year story. This stage connects to the milestones that follow, so parents can picture the full arc from day one to the first birthday.
Pro tip: If you’re looking for something for newborn to wear, I mostly suggest a diaper and a neutral swaddle! This shows off all of baby’s little details perfectly. However, if you’re looking for something more, something like this neutral two piece outfit photographs beautifully as well. (And this advice applies for ALL milestone sessions. There’s nothing cuter than a baby in a diaper at home!)

At three months, your baby is awake more, starting to smile on purpose, and just beginning to show you who they are. Three months is a turning point, and this is the first session where a baby’s personality slowly starts to show up on camera. I love to watch for eye contact with mom and dad, the cute little puzzled expressions so many babies make at this age, and of course the smiles (which sometimes takes some coaxing from mom and dad, or a toy held just off camera!) Three month photos really do feel different from the very start of the year, with a baby who is alert and engaged with the people they love. Often, parents are starting to spot their baby’s emerging temperament in these images, the earliest hints of who this little person is becoming, and the interactions between parents and babies make for some pretty sweet images. This along with photos of tummy time, baby lying on their back, giggling, holding their toes, or watching mom and dad up above are what make up the three month gallery.

Six months is the classic milestone session because babies can usually sit up on their own, which opens up a whole new range of adorable, interactive photos. Sitting up makes six months the iconic milestone session, with babies upright, engaged, and interacting for the first time. Picture eye contact and those big open mouthed grins. For babies who are right on the edge of sitting but not quite steady, I recommend either waiting until closer to nine months (there is nothing wrong with this if you really want sweet sitting pictures!) or use props like a blanket for baby to sit on (especially if it is one with sentimental value) or a neutral pillow behind them. Since I recommend shooting milestone sessions at home, this is easy to do. We can either shoot in a room with plenty of natural light, or outside in the yard, but either way shooting at-home makes both babies and parents feel more comfortable, and we can easily use these household items for babies who need a little extra support. So many families call this their favorite gallery of the year (and it honestly might be mine too!)

By nine months, most babies are crawling, pulling up, and showing off big personalities, which makes for lively, candid photos full of movement. This stage shifts from posed photos toward catching real movement and personality. In these sessions we’re keeping up with a baby who will not stop moving and I always tell parents, don’t try to stop them! This energy makes the images so special and real. Some parents choose to skip this stage and they end up missing the early moments of learning to crawl (or possibly even walk!) and all of the laughter that comes from that. This is also why I specialize in at-home sessions. A familiar setting helps a mobile baby feel comfortable enough to play and explore naturally on camera.

A cake smash session celebrates your baby turning one by letting them dig into a cake on camera, capturing pure, messy joy at the end of the first year. A cake smash has become the signature way to mark a first birthday, but some parents choose to celebrate this milestone with balloons or a birthday crown instead. (You can also opt for a more natural look without any special props or plans, and there is something truly beautiful about this as well!) Babies always react differently to their cake and it’s so fun to see the different personalities, from cautious one finger tasters to full face first divers. I’ve seen families do their cake smash session in so many different ways from bundt cakes, homemade cakes, fruit on top, a first birthday theme (or no theme)… there is no right or wrong way. Make the session unique to your family! For a cake smash I usually recommend the session take place in the yard, or in the kitchen if the light is good. This makes cleanup a bit easier. We’ve even thrown baby in the tub or the sink to wash off afterwards, and these photos turn out just as sweet! Sometimes babies do hate the cake, or are overwhelmed, and that’s completely normal. Shots of baby sitting next to their cake, or checking it out with just a finger, can be just as cute. Sometimes parents will smear a bit of the icing on baby’s lips to get them interested, or if your baby loves fruit, put fruit on top! Baby will be more interested in the cake if it’s accompanied by something they already know and love. One year cake smash sessions are so much fun, and really bookends the year and pairs with the earlier milestones for a complete story.

The Year of Life Collection bundles your baby’s milestone sessions into one experience, so you book once and capture the whole year without scrambling to schedule each session separately. This first year plan allows you to choose two to four sessions at the beginning of your journey to save money, time, and the stress of booking each stage, plus it comes with a beautiful album at the end. You’ll simply choose your favorite images across all of the sessions and I’ll take care of it from there. Once you’ve approved the design it will go into production, and you’ll walk away with a beautiful baby book of your baby’s first year. This plan was designed to keep families on track, so no milestone slips by unnoticed. When you book, I’ll simply write your due date down in my calendar, and when baby actually makes their appearance we’ll set a firm date for the newborn session. From there, we’ll schedule out the rest of your milestone sessions, so everything is written down and ready to go. The best time to reach out is during your second trimester (especially if you’d like maternity photos!) This may seem early, but it helps ensure I’ll have availability, and I can make sure to get your newborn session scheduled while they are still tiny and sleepy.

Once you have captured the whole year, the best part is turning those sessions into something you can hold and hang, like an album or a collection of framed prints. One of the best parts of the Year of Life Collection is that it comes with an album. This brings all of the milestones together in one place, so the whole first year lives in a single keepsake instead of scattered across a phone. Another great option that I am always happy to help with is a gallery wall and framed artwork. Similar to an album, a grouping of prints from each milestone tells the whole story across one wall. I have software I can use to get a visual mockup of the wall you’re considering, so you can see how large, and how many, frames you’ll need. Aside from the lay-flat album that comes with the Collection, I also offer matted prints, canvases, and frames in my online store. Something that I truly believe after watching my son react to our own printed family photos, is that printed products matter. Photos on a phone get forgotten, while an album or a wall display gets seen and loved every day. More than anything, I have families who did not book a Year of Life Collection come back to me years later asking if we can design an album from their newborn session. This is something I always love to do (and it makes me so happy when families reach back out!) but it’s so much easier to do from the beginning. I know this is something you’re going to want to be able to pull down and reminisce on, and the lay-flat album that comes with this Collection is such a beautiful way to keep a baby book.

Reach out during your second trimester. I like to schedule maternity photos when you’re between 28-34 weeks so you have a nice baby bump, but typically aren’t too uncomfortable. I’ll also write your due date in my calendar as a place holder, then when baby arrives reach out (after plenty of rest and snuggles) and we’ll set a firm date from there. I recommend scheduling baby’s newborn session within their first 7-14 days so they are still sleepy and flexible, and baby acne typically hasn’t made its appearance yet. However, I like to stay flexible. Well rested, better adjusted parents make for better photos than parents who are stressed or sleep deprived. In-home newborn photos capture this stage beautifully anywhere within the first month (and I can edit out almost anything if baby acne does pop up). After the newborn session I’ll email you my scheduler, and we can set the dates for the rest of our sessions. However, like I said, I’ll stay flexible. If you schedule a six month sitter session and they’re not sitting yet, reach out a couple of weeks before your session date and we can reschedule! Again, I’d rather you be comfortable, less stressed, and for the photos to turn out as you hoped.
Before we get started I send out a questionnaire to get to know your family, then before your first session we’ll have a quick chat over the phone to decide which rooms we’ll use, if you’d like wardrobe help, and to make sure we’re on the same page for the flow of the session. After that I’m available by text before each session to send wardrobe photos, or ask any last minute questions. I like to be as hands-on as possible to take the stress off of you, and make sure we really capture your family’s unique personalities and story! I also like to make sure each session is relaxed and comfortable for tired parents. There is no set time limit. If we’re done in 30 minutes, great, if it take 90 minutes because baby needed a diaper change or feeding breaks, that’s great too. I’m there until we’ve captured what we need, no rush and no stress. You’ll receive your images three weeks post shoot, and we’ll start designing your album after your final session.
The first year is not one moment, it is a series of them, and each session holds a version of your baby you will never get back. Booking the full year means you get to be present for this year of firsts instead of worrying about capturing them, I’ll be right there to document every stage. Which milestone are you most excited to capture?

If your baby has already been born, it’s not too late! Reach out now to see how a Year of Life Collection could still work for you.

No! The Year of Life Collection includes your choice of two or more sessions. Only want maternity and newborn photos, or newborn and one year photos? Great! We’ll customize the Collection to fit your vision, and you’ll still receive the album at the end.
My top suggestion is to keep it simple. Honestly, there’s nothing cuter than a baby in a diaper! Neutral colors keep the focus on baby and their features, and coordinating outfits for families instead of matching photograph best. I also offer more in-depth styling guides and wardrobe assistance after booking.
Sessions can range anywhere between 30-90 minutes. Younger babies sometimes need extra time for feeds, diaper changes, and naps. I plan for closer to 90 minutes for newborn photos. Six/nine month and one year sessions are typically closer to 30 minutes. No matter what, I keep the session relaxed so no one feels rushed.
This is completely normal, and easy to work around! We can either use props (such as blankets or a neutral pillow) to help baby sit up, or we can reschedule for closer to nine months when baby will be sitting up more independently. We can always adjust posing or timing so the session still works beautifully.
Family will always be included in newborn portraits. I have done the other milestones both ways, with some families opting for the session to be all about baby, and others wanting shots of the whole family as well.
