As a Kentucky wedding photographer, I had the honor of capturing Bryan + Blair’s backyard wedding over the weekend, and what a beautiful day it was! Weddings are a celebration of love and unity, and what better way to commemorate this special day than by embracing the beauty of nature in a backyard farm wedding?
Bryan + Blair’s day took place at the historic Simeon Moore House (now the Gatewood-Purnell Farm) in Taylorsville, Kentucky – and was full of love. There was not dry eye as Bryan watched Blair walk down the aisle and his brother officiated the ceremony. All of their vendors were friends and family, making their day just that much more special. Blair’s dress was handmade by a friend and was truly spectacular. (Not to mention the Momma’s Mustard, Pickles & BBQ was mouthwatering and the perfect meal to end this gorgeous day outside.) Their day was simple and beautiful, focusing on friends, family, and love – the most important aspects of a wedding day. The fresh air and the intimacy of a private setting truly created a magical atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
Are you interested in having your own backyard farm wedding? Here’s a glimpse into what makes it the perfect choice for couples seeking a unique and heartfelt celebration.
Imagine exchanging vows under the shade of an old tree, surrounded by fields of wildflowers and the gentle hum of bees. A backyard farm wedding offers a serene and picturesque backdrop that traditional venues can rarely match. The natural setting provides a canvas of beauty that needs minimal decoration, allowing the couple’s love and personal touches to shine.
One of the greatest advantages of a backyard farm wedding is the intimacy it offers. Whether it’s a family farm or a rented property, the familiar, cozy environment helps guests feel at ease and connected. There’s something incredibly special about hosting your wedding in a place with personal significance, creating memories that are tied to a location that holds meaning.
Rustic decor fits seamlessly into the farm setting. Think wooden signs, mason jar centerpieces, burlap table runners, and fairy lights strung across trees. These elements not only enhance the natural beauty but also provide an opportunity for DIY projects. Couples can infuse their personalities into the decor, crafting unique pieces that reflect their journey together. Handwritten signs, flower pots, and seeds as favors add a personal touch that guests will cherish.
A backyard farm wedding is also the perfect opportunity to incorporate fresh, local produce into your menu. Farm-to-table catering ensures that your guests enjoy the finest seasonal ingredients, making the meal memorable. Consider a buffet with locally sourced meats, fresh vegetables, and homemade desserts. For a truly farm-inspired touch, host a picnic-style reception with blankets spread out on the grass and baskets filled with artisanal goodies.
The expansive outdoor setting of a farm opens up a world of possibilities for entertainment. Lawn games like cornhole, horseshoes, and giant Jenga can keep guests entertained during cocktail hour. A bonfire pit is perfect for roasting marshmallows and sharing stories as the night grows dark. Live music, whether it’s a bluegrass band or an acoustic guitarist, adds to the laid-back, joyful atmosphere.
While a backyard farm wedding is enchanting, it does come with unique challenges. Weather is a significant factor, so having a contingency plan like a tent or an indoor barn space is essential. Ensure that there are adequate facilities for guests, including restrooms and parking. Lighting is crucial for evening events, so plan for plenty of string lights, lanterns, and candles to create a warm and inviting glow.
A backyard farm wedding is more than just an event; it’s an experience that weaves together love, nature, and personal touches into a beautiful tapestry of memories. It’s a day where couples can celebrate their love story in a setting that feels both grand and familiar, surrounded by the simplicity and splendor of nature. For those dreaming of a wedding that’s truly unique and heartfelt, a backyard farm wedding offers the perfect blend of rustic charm and intimate celebration.
