Quick Answer: No — your home doesn’t need to be Pinterest-perfect for beautiful in-home photos. All you really need is one good window with natural light and a family who loves being together. I’m not there to photograph your decor. I’m there to photograph your real life happening around it.

If I had a dollar for every time a client asked me some version of “is my house even nice enough for this?” I’d probably be able to retire early. It’s the single most common worry I hear before a session, and I completely understand why. We all scroll Pinterest and Instagram and start comparing our actual, lived-in homes to a curated feed. But here’s the truth after years of shooting in-home sessions all over Louisville: the families I photograph rarely have magazine-ready homes, and it has never once gotten in the way of beautiful photos. What makes a session beautiful isn’t your countertops. It’s the light, and it’s you.

Once you’re booked, I take the guesswork out of getting ready. You’ll receive a 14-page in-home prep guide covering all the common questions families have, from what to clean to what to wear. About 8 weeks before your session, I’ll send over a detailed questionnaire to get to know your family and what you value, so I can walk in already understanding your story instead of just running through a list of poses.
I’ll also ask for a quick video walkthrough of your home (nothing fancy or formal!) so I can study your light ahead of time. From there, we’ll hop on a session planning call where we’ll talk through wardrobe mockups if you’d like styling help, decide exactly which rooms we’ll use, and map out the flow of your session. This is also where the “what to clean” conversation really happens, because by then, I already know exactly which rooms we’re working with.

Here’s the short version: skip the deep clean. Once we know which rooms we’re actually using (thanks to that video walkthrough and planning call), I’d only focus on those rooms. As an example in a couple of main rooms:
And here’s what you genuinely do not need to stress about: dusting, vacuuming, baseboards, or organizing your closets. I promise, I’m not opening your cabinets! Your home doesn’t need to be magazine-ready. It just needs to feel like you.
Already feeling better about your house?

Maternity is one of the sessions I photograph both in-home and outdoors, and plenty of moms (especially ones who already have kids at home) choose to stay in. It means no fighting a toddler into the car, no melting in the heat, and a setting where your older kids already feel comfortable enough to actually be themselves in the photos with you. I recommend reaching out during your second trimester and scheduling between 28 and 34 weeks, and I’ll help you plan a wardrobe that feels like you and photographs beautifully, whether that’s something flowy and soft or simply what you already love wearing around the house.
In-home newborn sessions are where this style of photography typically shines. There’s no car seat transition with a five-day-old, no risk of a meltdown thirty minutes from the nursery, and plenty of room to pause for a feeding or diaper change without ever feeling rushed. I recommend booking within baby’s first 7 to 14 days when they’re still extra sleepy and flexible, though beautiful newborn photos are absolutely achievable anywhere within that first month. Parents and siblings are always included, because this stage is about your whole family stepping into a new chapter, not just the baby. And when it comes to wardrobe, simple is best; a diaper and a neutral swaddle shows off every tiny detail beautifully.
Family sessions are built entirely around your home and whatever your family already loves doing together, not a generic list of poses. That might mean sprinkler time in the backyard, a pizza party on the living room floor, baking cookies, or just piling onto the couch together. There’s no rigid time limit, because real moments can’t be rushed on a schedule, and we stay wherever the light and your family’s energy are best. And truly, most of my clients don’t have Pinterest-perfect homes. What actually shows up in the photos is whether you’re smiling and having fun with each other. The focus is on you, not your house.

Booking is meant to feel easy. Once you inquire, I respond quickly, usually within the hour and always within 24 hours. After a quick call to make sure our visions line up, you’ll sign your contract and pay your session fee to officially hold your date. From there, you’ll get your 14-page prep guide, the questionnaire about 8 weeks out, the video walkthrough request, and our planning call, exactly like we talked through above.
On session day, there’s no strict time limit. I stay until we’ve captured your story. Afterward, you’ll receive your full gallery in about 3 weeks, and from there, you can choose your favorite images, order prints or wall art, or begin designing a heirloom album with me.
Ready to see what your home looks like in the right light?

No. We’ll only focus on the specific rooms we’re using, which we determine ahead of time through your video walkthrough and planning call. Skip the deep clean entirely.
That’s genuinely all you need. I typically start in-home sessions around 10:00am and look for the room with the best natural light, often on the south or east side of the home.
It doesn’t matter. Most of my clients don’t have picture-perfect homes, and it’s never once affected how the photos turn out. If you’re smiling and enjoying each other, that’s what shows up in the images, not your décor.
Not at all. I’m not styling your home, and I’m not opening your cabinets or closets. Your home just needs to feel like you.
Completely fine, and honestly encouraged. A lived-in home photographs more beautifully than a staged one. Those little details are exactly what you’ll want to remember later.
Absolutely. This worry is so common that I built my entire prep process, from the video walkthrough to the planning call, specifically to put your mind at ease before session day ever arrives.
