Preparing for your in-home newborn photography session doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little planning, and a lot of grace, you can enjoy a relaxed and meaningful experience that results in timeless photos of your growing family.
Use this simple guide to feel confident and ready when photo day arrives.

Newborn sessions are best when scheduled 7–14 days after birth. During this time, babies tend to be sleepier, more flexible, and easier to soothe. This window also helps minimize baby acne and fussiness, creating softer, more peaceful images.
If possible, booking during pregnancy helps secure availability during this ideal timeframe.

Your entire home doesn’t need to be photo-ready. Instead, select one or two rooms with large windows and plenty of natural light. Popular choices include the living room, nursery, master bedroom, or kitchen.
A quick declutter is more than enough. Clear nightstands, countertops, and floors so the focus stays on your family, not the background. Your home does not need to look perfect to create beautiful photos.

If your master bedroom has colorful or dark bedding, consider switching to white or ivory linens for your session. Light neutrals help create a bright, airy look that photographs beautifully and keeps attention on your baby.
If you’re breastfeeding, wear clothing that allows easy access. Newborns often nurse frequently during sessions, and nursing-friendly outfits help keep things smooth and stress-free. A happy, fed baby makes all the difference.

Soft neutrals and pastel tones photograph best. Bright or neon colors can reflect onto skin and impact your complexion. Many moms prefer loose, flowy dresses, which are both flattering and comfortable, especially since it’s completely normal to still look somewhat pregnant after delivery.
For partners, simple outfits like a solid t-shirt or button-up with jeans or slacks work best. Avoid bold patterns like plaid or pinstripes, which can be distracting.

If older siblings will be part of your session, plan for movement. You’ll likely be sitting, squatting, or holding little ones. Midi or maxi dresses make this much easier than short dresses, high slits, or low-cut tops.
You don’t need to practice posing ahead of time. I’ll guide you through the entire session with easy, natural movements. If something feels a little funny, it’s usually because it’s going to create a genuine laugh, and those moments often become favorites.

Bring snacks, water, and a few small, neutral-colored toys just in case. Avoid screen time the morning of your session if possible, and consider planning a fun reward afterward. Most importantly, give yourself and your kids grace. Perfect behavior is never expected.
Your baby is the star of the show. Wraps and snug swaddles photograph best. Newborn clothing often looks oversized. I’ll bring a swaddle and get baby comfortably wrapped before we start the session!
If you prefer not to swaddle, knotted gowns (like this option from LouLou & Company), are a beautiful alternative. Headbands or bonnets are always welcome if you’d like to include them as well.
These early days pass quickly, but your photos will preserve them forever. If you’re expecting or have recently welcomed a baby, I’d love to help you document this sweet season.
