As the weather warms and flowers begin to bloom, it’s the perfect time to capture those precious family moments with a spring photo session! I’m Michelle Bordenkircher, a family photographer based right here in Lexington, and I’m thrilled to share some tips and tricks for making your spring family photo session a breeze.
First things first, let’s talk about something every parent stresses over: their child’s behavior during the shoot. Trust me, I’ve seen it all! From toddlers with boundless energy to grumpy teenagers, I’ve learned to embrace the chaos. So please, don’t worry if your little one is having a tough day. I understand that family portraits can be challenging, and it’s not a reflection of your parenting skills. Just relax, and let me work my magic. I promise there’s beauty in the chaos!
Now, let’s address the outfits. My photography style is bright and airy, so I recommend sticking to light, neutral tones for that timeless look. Dark, heavy colors can weigh down the photos, so try to limit them to just one or two pieces. Think light wash denim, soft pastels, and creams. And while patterns are totally fine, just make sure they’re not too small or busy.

Consider your space and location when choosing outfits. If you’re planning to display your photos in a room with neutral tones, coordinate your outfits accordingly. And if you’re shooting in a park or wooded area, light, neutral colors will stand out beautifully against the natural backdrop.
Moms, I know how tempting it is to reach for those trusty black leggings, but try to avoid all-black outfits. They can make the photos look darker and heavier than they actually are. And steer clear of super bright colors like neon, as they can cast unflattering hues on your skin.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the moment with your family. So keep smiling, even if it feels like chaos around you. Trust me, those genuine moments of laughter and joy are what make the best photos.
Spring weather can be unpredictable, with sunny skies one moment and sudden rain showers the next. Flexibility is key when planning your photo session. Keep in mind that we may need to reschedule if the weather doesn’t cooperate on the day of your session. However, don’t let a little rain deter you – some of the most beautiful and unique photos can be captured in the rain, with colorful umbrellas adding a whimsical touch.
Dressing in layers is a practical way to prepare for the ever-changing temperatures of spring. Consider outfits that can easily be layered or removed as needed. Light jackets, cardigans, scarves, and hats not only provide warmth but also add visual interest and texture to your photos. Plus, they offer the opportunity to incorporate different colors and patterns into your family’s wardrobe, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your photos.
It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. If we’ve planned an outdoor session and rain is in the forecast, we can either reschedule for another day or consider alternative indoor locations. In-home sessions offer a cozy and intimate atmosphere, allowing us to capture genuine moments and interactions within the comfort of your own home. Alternatively, we can explore indoor venues such as museums, botanical conservatories, or even your favorite coffee shop, depending on your preferences and availability.
Sometimes, the best photos are captured when we embrace the elements rather than trying to avoid them. If it’s drizzling lightly or overcast, don’t be afraid to venture outdoors and let nature become part of your photoshoot. Raindrops glistening on petals, puddles reflecting the sky, and misty landscapes can all add depth and mood to your images. With the right attitude and a willingness to get a little wet, you might just end up with some of your favorite photos yet.
By staying flexible, dressing appropriately, and embracing the elements, you can ensure that your spring family photo session is a success, rain or shine. Remember, it’s not just about capturing picture-perfect moments – it’s about embracing the beauty of imperfection and creating memories that reflect the uniqueness of your family’s story.
See why you need family photos!
Select locations that hold significance to your family. This could be your favorite park where you go for picnics, the beach where you have annual vacations, or even your own backyard where you spend quality time together.
Bring along props that represent your family’s interests or hobbies. For example, if you’re a musical family, bring along instruments for a fun jam session during the shoot. If you love sports, incorporate your favorite equipment or jerseys into the photos.
Coordinate your outfits in a way that reflects your family’s personality or a particular theme. Consider wearing clothing in colors that complement each other or outfits that showcase your family’s style.
If your family has special traditions or rituals, incorporate them into the session. This could be anything from baking cookies together to having a family game night captured in photos.
If pets are an integral part of your family, don’t forget to include them in the photo session. Pets add an extra layer of personality and warmth to your photos and can make for adorable candid moments.
Instead of focusing solely on posed portraits, allow the photographer to capture candid moments that reflect your family’s dynamics and interactions. These authentic moments often result in the most heartfelt and memorable images.
Incorporate elements that pay homage to your family’s heritage or generational connections. This could involve wearing traditional clothing, displaying family heirlooms, or incorporating cultural symbols into the photos.
By incorporating these personal touches into your family photo session, you’ll not only create beautiful images but also capture the essence of what makes your family unique and special. These photos will serve as cherished mementos that tell your family’s story for generations to come.
Check out this in-home session!
In-home sessions offer a cozy and familiar environment, allowing you and your family to feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the shoot. This intimacy often leads to candid and authentic moments captured on camera.
Your home is a reflection of your family’s personality and lifestyle, making it the perfect backdrop for showcasing your unique story. Incorporating meaningful props or incorporating favorite rooms and spaces adds a personal touch to your photos.
Since in-home sessions take place indoors, they are not affected by external weather conditions. This makes them an excellent option for unpredictable weather days or for families with young children who may not fare well in outdoor settings.
In-home sessions offer flexibility in terms of timing and scheduling. You have the freedom to choose a time that works best for your family’s schedule without worrying about conflicting with outdoor lighting conditions.
Outdoor sessions allow you to take advantage of the scenic beauty of nature as your backdrop. From lush parks and gardens to picturesque landscapes, outdoor settings provide a stunning canvas for your family portraits.
Outdoor locations offer a diverse range of backdrops and settings, allowing for a variety of poses and compositions. Whether you prefer a rustic woodland setting or a vibrant urban landscape, there’s a location to suit every family’s style and preferences.
Spring, in particular, brings with it a burst of color and life, making outdoor sessions during this time especially enchanting. Blooming flowers, budding trees, and fresh greenery add a touch of seasonal beauty to your photos.
Outdoor sessions often lend themselves to more playful and interactive photoshoots, as families can engage in activities like playing games, walking together, or simply enjoying the natural surroundings. This can result in lively and dynamic images that capture the joy and energy of your family.
Ultimately, whether you choose an in-home or outdoor session depends on your family’s preferences, the aesthetic you’re aiming for, and any logistical considerations such as weather and scheduling. As your photographer, I’m here to guide you through the decision-making process and ensure that we create beautiful and meaningful portraits that perfectly reflect your family’s unique personality and story.
Lexington boasts an array of picturesque outdoor locations that serve as stunning backdrops for family photos. The Kentucky Horse Park offers vast expanses of greenery and iconic horse fences, while the Arboretum State Botanical Garden of Kentucky showcases a variety of seasonal blooms and tranquil pathways.
