Congratulations on your engagement!! As a Louisville, KY wedding photographer, there’s something that I absolutely love about capturing a couple’s love story through an engagement session. Now that you’re planning your engagement session, let’s talk about one of the most fun and creative parts: choosing your outfits. Your engagement session is a chance to showcase your personality and love story, so picking the right outfits can make all the difference. Here are some tips for engagement session outfits that will look great in photos and help you feel comfortable during your session.
Most of my couples choose two outfits for their engagement session, and I think it’s a great idea! Typically, one outfit leans towards the dressier side while the other is more relaxed and casual. This not only gives you variety in your photos but also reflects different aspects of your style. Think about how you want to be portrayed: a chic and sophisticated look for part of the session and a laid-back, cozy vibe for the other.
Coordination is key, but it doesn’t mean you need to wear identical colors. Instead of striving for the exact same shade, opt for colors that complement each other. For example, if one of you is in a deep blue, the other could wear a lighter blue or a neutral that complements the tone. This approach creates harmony without being too matchy-matchy.
If one of you is rocking a bold pattern or a vibrant color, it’s often best to balance it out with a neutral tone for the other person. This helps to avoid overwhelming the images and keeps the focus on both of you. A simple, neutral outfit can tone down a brightly patterned or colorful ensemble, creating a well-balanced look in your photos.
This is just an idea, but some couples like to plan their engagement session attire to match their wedding theme. If you’re excited about a specific color scheme or style for your wedding, coordinating your engagement outfits can help create a cohesive look for your Save The Dates and other wedding-related announcements. It’s a fun way to tie everything together!
Don’t stress too much about your outfits. Some of my favorite engagement photos feature simple attire, like a classic v-neck shirt. The focus should be on you and your connection, not on complicated outfits. Comfort and confidence are what really make your photos shine!
Ensure that your outfits are balanced in terms of formality. If the bride is wearing a chic little black dress, the groom probably shouldn’t be in shorts and sneakers. Harmonizing your levels of formality ensures that both of you complement each other and look equally stylish in your photos.
Don’t be afraid to let your unique style shine through in your outfits! Whether you have a flair for vintage fashion or love edgy streetwear, incorporating your personal style makes the session more authentic and memorable. I’ve seen some amazing engagement shoots where couples’ individual styles truly made their photos stand out.
When it comes to shirts, opt for solid colors rather than tiny patterns. The camera can sometimes struggle with very fine patterns, which can lead to issues like chromatic aberration (where colors can appear fringed or distorted). You want your images to be crisp and clear, so keep it simple with solid hues.
Accessories can add a lot of personality to your outfits. Scarves, necklaces, belts, and other accessories can enhance your look and add visual interest to your photos. Just be sure not to overdo it—choose accessories that complement your outfit rather than overpower it.
The most important tip of all: wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. I’ll guide you through flattering poses, but you’ll love your photos even more if you’re at ease in your outfit. Confidence truly shines through in photographs, so choose pieces that make you feel great!
For extra romantic shots, consider incorporating something long and flowy into your wardrobe. I adore photographing fabric that moves gracefully in the wind! Light, neutral colors can also create a dreamy, airy effect, regardless of the weather.
Your engagement session is a unique opportunity to celebrate your love story and create beautiful memories that you’ll cherish forever. With these tips for engagement session outfits that shine in photos, you’ll not only look stunning but also feel confident and at ease in front of the camera.
